Clark County, which covers 7,910 square miles and has a 2000 population of
about 1.4 million people. It includes the metropolitan Las Vegas area, all
outlying communities and rural areas. Each Nevada County has one school
district responsible for K-12 public education within that county.
Enrollment The Clark County School District is
the sixth largest school district in the United States, and its enrollment grew
by 6.4 percent since last school year. 2000-2001 enrollment - 231,125
students 1999-2000 enrollment - 217,139 students

Schools The district operates 250 schools as of the 2000-2001
school year: 159 - elementary schools 37 - middle schools 31 - high
schools 17 - alternative schools 6 - special schools
New
schools To ensure that all students have a place in a classroom
environment conducive to learning, the Clark County School District operates
one of the nation's largest school construction and modernization programs. The
district is opening eight new elementary schools and two new middle schools in
the 2000-2001 school year, including the first six to be constructed under the
$3.7 billion 1998 building program. This program will fund site acquisition and
construction of 88 new schools, two new bus yards, technology improvements, and
modernization to bring older schools up to new school standards. The district
plans to open 13 new schools during the 2001-2002 school year.

employs 25,823 people. This includes full-time, part-time, substitute and
temporary employees.
Budget The general operating fund final budget
for the 2000-2001 school year is $1.092 billion.

School The Meadows School is Nevada's first and only nonprofit,

Schools, The Meadows School is licensed by the State of Nevada. Located in The
Pueblo Village, The Meadows School opened its Summerlin campus in 1988 on a
40-acre parcel of land donated by The Howard Hughes Corporation. Approximately
$10 million worth of improvements and facilities have been completed to
accommodate students in grades pre-K through 12. The campus includes separate
facilities for the lower, middle and upper schools, a field house, baseball

currently serves more than 400 children. The academy is licensed to provide
private kindergarten, in addition to preschool and child care, as well as
after-school care for older students.
